Bob Ross Birthday Party

Many of you probably don't know the name, Bob Ross. But you do know who he is. The big afro , soft voice of oil painting on PBS. That's right. The guy that was on PBS when we were kids. So why am I bringing up Bob Ross? Why? Some good friends of ours were celebrating the husbands 40th birthday and decided to do something different. Canvas, brushes, spatulas and oil paint were purchased and makeshift easels were constructed in the garage.

We started the evening prepping our canvas with white wash paint. Then we let that dry and had dinner and conversation. We all talked about the TV shows we watched when we were kids and reminisced about Captain Kangaroo, Sesame Street and the Electric company.

After about a half hour we put in a Bob Ross original PBS show. The show runs about 30 minutes and at the end of the 30 minutes we would have a beautiful oil painting of a cottage on the lake in snow capped mountains, in theory 30 minutes. In reality we took about 2 hours. Stopping to catch up to Bob, rewinding to figure out how he made the pine trees or snow on the mountains. We had a great time and there was only a couple of small paint fight skirmishes.

I guess the thing that made the evening fun is it was something that we never would have thought before to do. Something maybe we were all afraid to tackle or thought was just not our thing. We all felt just a little out of our element and we had a fun time doing it.
